A CHALLENGE

...but before THE CHALLENGE, here's something to ponder...

One of the three principles of sustainability is Turing Waste into a Resource. Whenever I first heard this principle, I immediately thought of all the scraps of things that get thrown away that I could be using in my art. Then I thought of my compost bin.  After that, I began thinking about more intangible concepts, like:

T I M E   a n d   E N E R G Y .

As busy as I can sometimes be, I waste quite a bit of these precious commodities in little ways. So I kept a log. I realized that Facebook and Solitaire were two HUGE time AND energy wasters. Now that I know this, what to do about it? Since my goal focuses around health, I decided to carve 30 minutes out of these 2 'wasters' and take a daily walk (weather permitting). More than that, I'm walking where I need to go...like my studio, the grocery store, my husband's shop.  This one action also incorporates the other two principles of sustainability - creating closed loops and symbiotic relationships.

HERE IS YOUR CHALLENGE...

Keep a log for the next few days, taking notice of the things that get wasted as you go about your day. It can be things you throw away (leftover food, paper products, money) or things that can be a challenge to contain(water, money, electricity). When you notice a 'wasted resource' or a 'wasting behavior/activity', write it down.

At the end of each day, look over your list and write out one SIMPLE change that you can make to reduce waste in one area that you wrote down. Then do it.

Let me know if you had an AHA  moment with this challenge. If you would like to take this further, learn more about our upcoming workshop this Sunday!
